Really? Huh, must not have been paying attention......is that why they are the same everytime!?
I don't really understand, why would forum posts cause the games to be the same every time? They are the same every time because they are sold to children and there's always new children that are playing their first pokemon game.

Edit: Also, there you go. All your complaints about the staleness of Pokemon. That one was 10 years ago but I know I've seen others, the search function on the site is garbage, though.

Are they? They usually sell 10-20 mil copy, I don't think there's enough children that play game to justify those numbers. I think there's a sizable number of people who actually like that pokemon are always the same, sorta comfort food like. And so long as they keep pulling those numbers there's 0 reason to change the formula.

According to this site, in the United States there are roughly 25 million children each between the ages of 0-5, 6-11, and 12-17. That's 25 million children reaching Pokemon playing age every 5 years. Expand those numbers worldwide and I'm sure you will find enough children to cover a majority of the sales. Also, consider that it will likely take a kid at least 2 or 3 games to start to realize that the games are the same thing every time, and there you go.

Yes, there are the dedicated hard-core fans that have played every game in the series and will continue to do so forever, but I don't think it's necessary to take them into account to justify the majority of Pokemon sales.

I still find it baffling that Pokemon still gets away with selling two versions of the same game.

If any other franchise tried that, they would be laughed out of the room.

But why stop, when people like my friend consistently buy both versions at launch?

I didn't do that. I don't know what you're talking about *clutches both copies*

I think I heard that for this latest remaster/remake/whatever, there is literally a switch in the code that turns the version from one to the other. It is indeed absolutely fucking ridiculous. Especially when they would release a third version that had all the shit from both games. Dunno if they still do that though.

OT: I'm a Gen III kid, and Diamond and Pearl are exactly when I hopped off the wagon. I just could not stand the new designs, and the new faux-3D look in general. It all just felt so damn slow to me. I wish they would do a pixel version Pokemon game again. I'd play it just for the nostalgia.

The update got rid of having to teach your Pokemon HM moves so it's a 10/10 remake for me.

EDIT: Adding on to this. Diamond and Pearl were the last mainline Pokemon games I finished until Sun and Moon. I fell off of B&W because it both felt stale and it was kind of a slap in the face for them to have a group of people in game bring up that were basically having animals engage in combat sports only to immediately show the group to be just like Team Rocket and toss the issue into the trash.
I know people talk a lot about N and stuff but I never got far enough in the game for that plotline to develop so it's moot for me.
Sun and Moon felt refreshing though, taking time away from the series and them doing enough different to make things feel different enough helped.
I feel like Sword & Shield were a step back in a lot of ways. Even for a Pokemon game the story feels stripped down and after having the trial system for Sun & Moon I was really hoping they'd continue with different gym systems for other places in the world.

But I feel like complaining about a remake being like how the original game was is inserting a valid question to a problem where it doesn't belong though. A remake should try to hold to the original.

My two cents, for what it's worth.

I stopped caring at Pokémon Crystal. I didn't even bother finishing the game. Party group bored of the games, and wanted to move on to different stuff. Especially when it's the same crap over and over again. I am glad to have never looked back.

I feel like that while most people are certainly making valid complaints, there's this subset of people that complain about things in Pokemon so they have something to complain about.
I was hearing someone complaining about having random encounters in this game because they felt like it wasted their time but also complain about EXP share leveling up their Pokemon despite the fact that if they didn't have EXP share then they'd be grinding, which would involve a time sink.
Feels like they just hopped on talking points that belong to two different kinds of people and rode with it. There's people that think the games are too easy which would complain about EXP share but a different set of people who complain about the games being a chore and taking too long and these two groups have different wants from the games.

I remember people complaining about the EXP share when they made it party-wide in X&Y (IIRC). They complained that it made the game too easy, but that wasn't true. All it did was remove most of the grinding required for the vast majority of the game. And the EXP share continues to provide that service. Pokemon games still have plenty of fucking grinds in them for those that want to be a part of that (namely shiny-grinding and 100% pokedex completion.)

What made games like X&Y too easy was the fact that the starters were over fucking powered as fuck. That fire/psychic fox starter basically was the only pokemon you needed for 85% of the whole game.

The EXP share had nothing to do with it.

Isn’t the theme “Gotta catch ‘em all!”?.

Fuck that noise.
It was fun to do when it was possible, but nowadays it's just impossible. If someone genuinely want to play a pokemon game with the goal of capturing everyone then pokemon is simply not the game for that and they should go and play a pokemon-like game instead. Alternatively you can wait a few months and get a modified rom of the game that has all the pokemon catchable in game.
