It is Greek. -i is a Latin plural ending, or sometimes a Latinised Greek ending (from -oi).
"Octopodes" is the "correct" plural, but since it is now an English word the English -es plural is more appropriate.
But when someone says "octopi" we all know what they mean.
Chambers' tweet was pretty stupid. Of course we've all felt angry enough at some time to threaten violence, but this kind of message in the public domain is not acceptable. The authorities absolutely do have to take it seriously - they can't just say "Oh, it's just Twitter, it's not real."...
Not sure why everyone is assuming that because the dog was a large breed it was necessarily violent by nature. Bullmastiffs are, as a breed, generally very docile, obedient and loyal. They are prized as family pets for this reason.
This is a very unfortunate incident, but dogs are complex...
