i have Lenovo z50 with core i5 processor with no problems and don't need an upgrade and run till GTA V without any problems, you should upgrade if you need to play those heavy games with the highest graphic setting otherwise you will not need. you can buy 2 in 1 laptops...

for under $400 you can get nice processor but make sure to get at least core i5 and 4 GB of ram, i think the Asus has great laptops under that price with good performances
