Thanks for the help. It wasn't Xenogears, sadly. That was a good game though. It's really hard to remember any details about the game other than you start on a ship of some kind with a lot of empty cabins and the first battle is blatantly scripted so you can't lose.

I believe the combat was turn based as well if that helps at all.

It came out in the 1990's if I remember correctly.
