Poll: How Happy Are You Being Single?

I'm probably going to get crap for this, but I see a lot of people saying things like "I only want this one girl/guy and nobody else (who may or may not know I even exist)" - that sounds like a recipe for disaster to me. What if you do get together with that person, and they turn out to be...

    Death mechanics in games...

So, I see where you're going with that, but Diablo wasn't Nintendo Hard, it was hard based on a death mechanic that was purposely implemented to make the player spend time working to get back to their body (actually, it's pretty close to a mechanic that I grew to love/hate, the Everquest corpse...

    Death mechanics in games...

I was playing one of the Castlevania games for the DS the other day, and I wasn't being too careful and ended up getting myself killed. After a marvelous "game over" screen, I got the sudden realization that now I have to start over from my last save. This means I lost everything I found...

Buy Your Very Own (Fiberglass) Dinosaur

Sad, I used to visit this place as a kid. I wish I had money to scoop one of them up, but it's sad to think kids won't get to experience it anymore.

Days of High Adventure: When Characters Were Born, Not Made

I've never really done any serious roleplaying, but I'm curious to what you mean by not being invested in your character. Even if I was given a randomly made hero, I would still care about him, otherwise, why would I care whether he succeeds or fails?

It's time to end the debate!

I would love to see a game that lets you really decide how you want it to play out. Can you think of any examples that let you get away with this much freedom? I've been really struggling with Star Wars: TOR, trying to roleplay a bounty hunter as much as possible to ONLY care about money...

What if the player character in a game was the villain?

I think this is taking it too far to an extreme, and I've been trying to avoid this point myself...obviously the player has to control some character in the game, or it's not much of a game. My point above that the player character in Dungeon Keeper isn't really a "villain", is because his...

What if the player character in a game was the villain?

I really agree with the first point. In games like Dungeon Keeper or (probably) Evil Genius, the "villain" you play is just aesthetically swapped with the relevant "hero" in, say, a tower defense game (I know they are not tower defense games, but it's the closest to a quick explanation I can...

What if the player character in a game was the villain?

What if instead of the character believing his actions to be good, he knows full well that his actions are bad/evil (I hate to say evil because I think less extreme than that) - but we're forced to watch as we play and the story unfolds from his point of view. Again harking back to my example...

Notch says 'If you can't afford Minecraft, just pirate it'.

I keep hearing things about piracy being able to have a positive effect on potential sales, it's interesting to see such a strong example. How many more people are going to buy the game now that he's stated that he'd be ok with people getting it for free? Respect goes a long way...

What if the player character in a game was the villain?

This is really getting to the root of my original question. The downside here of course being that you have to know the story to "game the system" in a way that makes you constantly the villain. There's also, I assume (I haven't played the game, but let's say 90% chance) a huge nudge in the...

What if the player character in a game was the villain?

Wow, a lot of great responses. Evil Genius or Overlord are probably along the lines of what I'm thinking. I didn't mean games where you choose good/evil as you play through a series of morally dubious actions, but rather that you're typecast by the story into being a bad guy. I guess I'm...

What if the player character in a game was the villain?

I was just wondering, thinking about games like Uncharted and such, a lot of games have anti-heroes for the main character. But what if a game had the player cast as a straight up villain, who's motivated by greed or personal gain instead of trying to help some greater good?
