I still only see the thing as mediocre, and though designed with skill that L.B. Jeffries has just enlightened me to, not historical or "great". It's fun, but the world, despite what Yahtzee tells you, is filled with fun games.
Whyyyyyyyy? They're still just deriving from themselves. They're well made platformers, but there are others that are pretty much as good. In the long term, the Mario games just seem so... empty.
How? it used precisely the same layout and gameplay as SMB3. Riding Yoshi added a really, really small amount to it and that was it. And being influential within a franchise is not that big a deal.
I got this game after seeing it basically get what I think was second place in a "(Seriously now) what is the greatest game ever?" thread. Seemed like the standard Mario doldrums to me. Pleasant music and moderately fun, but not that fun. I really think that there is a huge bias toward it...
