I only found it scary when the monster was near, besides that, if I was just alone in the dark, with no oil for lantern, I would try to light up the rooms, If I couldn't, I would scavenge the rooms for oil. I wouldn't be scared much. But yeah, only if I was getting chased, or if the monster...
