Ian McEwan's 'Enduring Love' is very immersive. I could not put the book down until I had finished it. 'Saturday' is very good too, but a little easier to put down if you're planning to get some sleep.
Actually I'm a bit surprised Ian McEwan hasn't been mentioned yet, for me at least he does...
Well, I don't think that girls are the only ones who love it when you play something for them, so if she'd said: "Girls or guys..." it wouldn't be bad advice, I think.

They somehow changed the Iliad into a generic Hollywood story.
Also, I think the Twilight movie is actually better than the book. There is less gooey lovey-dovey fanfictionesque stupidity, and more resemblance of a plot.
It's still a terrible movie, but it's not as vomit-inducing...
