It was something close to that I think. The first level had you start in a town or city, you could either continue to the right or enter a building you pass, defeat some monsters inside of it, and the owner and his daughter would thank you and upgrade your weapons.

Can someone help me remember the name of an arcade game I used to like to play? It was a four player side scroller which let you have multiple choices on where to go next. There was a level where you fought a goblin or a troll on a boat, you could not kill it because it just got right back up...
