I don't think that happened until the PS2 era. The three PS1 titles all had great Sakaguchi narrative and depth, especially IX.

First FF I played was Final Fantasy: Legend II for the gameboy. In the UK we didn't get access to FFI, FFIV or FFVI like the US audiences so we only had the gameboy games to toy with. The first proper title of the series was FFVII for us limeys. I loved it dearly. FFVIII I loved more. FFIX...
