Granted it isn't a story, but the first album by Tomahawk qualifies as dark and gritty. Dark and gritty story, though: The Gunslinger (Stephen King). IMO, the Dark Tower should never have been finished. However, the first book is still great and stands alone perfectly well enough. Very mixed...

Nice. My personal favorite in the realm of made up words is Lewis Carroll. I also rather enjoy making up words. To coin a word or phrase, a truly unique instance of language, that (maybe more perfectly) captures an idea is an immense joy for me. Well executed portmanteau is beautiful...
