That's probably a bug. Hunting doesn't tend to produce kill messages. Though some of those reports are probably just combat training. EDIT: Also, the badgers. Whenever one gets enraged (i.e. you look at it cross-eyed) it produces a combat report even if there's no possible way of it fighting you.
