Lucasfilm Makes It Official: Star Wars: Expanded Universe Is Dead

This is really that attitude that fans of every succesful franchise need to adopt if they don't want to go crazy. Star Wars, Star Trek, Dr.Who, Firefly, Marvel, DC, you name it... they're all going to arbitrarily rewrite canon as it suits them. The sooner you can cut your emotional attachment...

    Fox Will Reboot Flash Gordon

I guess I'm the outlier here, because I don't want to see a "camp" remake at all. That's not to say I want to see a gritty or "realistic" take either. Despite the sci-fi elements, it's a fantasy series at it's core. It needs to be fun, sure, but it should be played straight rather than...

    Take-Two: MMOs Don't Work in the U.S.

What he's basically saying is: Developing a successful MMO in North America takes time, money, creativity, and no small amount of risk. Meanwhile, we can go to Asia, slap together a derivative grindfest from a generic MMO template, and make good margins off a tiny investment.

    Kickstopper

Much as I'm excited to see a Veronica Mars movie, I'm in full agreement with Bob that the industry-related implications of this are frightening. Then again, Kickstarter as a whole has already been moving away from being an "indie thing" to a promotional and financial tool used by ever larger...

No, they're making a new version of KOTOR with an online multiplayer mode and a subscription pay model.

Spector: Videogames Still "Comic Books" and "Cartoons"

Hey, if you're an old gamer like me, you don't want gaming to get any more mainstream. The drive to broaden the market is why the industry has become obsessed with graphics and explosions. As someone pointed out earlier, gamers used to be content with text games ("You have been attacked by a...

Blizzard's Next-Gen MMO An "Enormous Investment"

If you insist on binary either/or interpretations of everything, then yes that's how it works. I am not so intellectually limited, however. There is a difference between: a) standing still (i.e. derived clones) b) taking the next step up the stairs (logical progression, i.e. where most of...

Blizzard's Next-Gen MMO An "Enormous Investment"

I used to feel the same way. Then I realized that TOR isn't really an MMORPG. It's actually KOTOR 3 with a multiplayer mode and a subscription payment model. Although a good argument could be made that with 8 class storylines, it's really KOTOR 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10.

Blizzard's Next-Gen MMO An "Enormous Investment"

Diablo was the logical next phase in a gameplay style that had been around since the early 80's. It was neither innovative nor derivative. It was a game that many companies would have made, but Blizzard did it first and did it best. Blizzard's real strength is exection, not innovation...
