Every other modern RTS took the idea of capturing flags but failed to recreate the arcade style gameplay. The game was quite difficult though.

Not just the refinement. I'd say the main thing is gameplay diversity blended with cinematic experience. Half-Life games aim to make each scene/level unique.
No matter the refinement of far cry(ies), crysis(es), halo(s) (and those are all major products no doubt) there you get the same routines...
