As long as the gameplay itself is about perpetuating violence then I don't see how you can escape from the action movie feel, with all its dumbed down / cartoonish violence thrown in. A puzzle or adventure game set in a violent landscape is the only way you could actually have serious violence...
There's a great zombie survival roguelike called Cataclysm that implements asynchronous multiplayer in a fun and innovative way. If you play on the online server the world gets updated between plays by how other players have modified the terrain. You might find their raided houses, abandoned...
I think many are missing the point Yahtzee has made. Procedural generation can be great, where the designer writes algorithms which create content based on specific rulesets, with the focus being on producing interesting and replayable content. At the heart of things it involves making a basic...
Was wondering when the Escapist would finally get to this...
The London event was awesome to be at. Some really cool and original stuff came out, like Ghost Dad 2 where you control your cat children with the microphone. And I can't believe Molyneux himself came! I'm not sure he approved of...
Oblivion runs fine on Windows 7. From what I've heard even just the Shivering Isles expansion that comes with it is worth the price. The levelling system is a bloody horrible thing though. I wonder if anyone will do a Skyrim-style levelling mod for Oblivion?
There might be instances where you complete a quest before you receive it, but it won't involve doing the dungeon over again. Monsters do not respawn, quests can never be repeated, and normally the NPC would act like you completely the quest straight away. Worst that can happen is the dialogue...
Yep, that's normal. Towns, cities, quests, etc are really quite optional in TES games. If you want you can just wander around and do your own thing. Many if not most dungeons are completely unrelated to any specific quest.
Do you need to play through the whole of Oblivion to access the Shivering Isles expansion pack, or can you play it on its own? From what people are saying it seems to be easily worth the $5 on its own.
I've been thinking about getting Oblivion now and leaving Skyrim on ice till some of the UI problems are ironed out. Similarly to the OP I wasn't that big on Fallout 3 in spite of being very pumped for it in advance. I very much enjoyed Morrowind, and have mostly avoided Oblivion based on the...
The developer of The Binding of Isaac recently made an interesting point in the Roguelike Radio podcast about how commercial games will always be inferior to indie games overall since mixing money and art ultimately leads to bad design...
Funny to see this when The Escapist is fully skinned in Age of Conan ads... Decent review, but could have torn it to shreds more. I guess it would end up as general MMO bashing though, which while enjoyable has already been done.
"Stickle Bricks Bablyon 5" had me laughing very loudly I must admit - really chock full of good jokes this week.
Okay, okay, so of course we're gonna moan, but honestly the music choices before were always so appropriate and funny - they were part of the whole humour. Plus the new rocky...
