In answer to your question, the ad _was_ trying to be funny. In my opinion, it succeeded. Another ad that was wierd was the one for windows with Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Gates at Shoe Circus. I only know like 3 people who thought that was funny (myself included); everyone else was like "WTF?"
