It wont destroy your experience, the one instance they have been helpful is when dealing with a new enemy, even then messages places on the ground are infinitely more helpful. It's not a game breaker, but the game will make you very cautious. Messages just save you time looking up guides.

Although I die inside a little every time someone trashes Oblivion, I have to sit back and remember that it can be a ***** to really get into. I think Fallout is a little more accessible because it does a little less of the whole drop you with no direction and a ton of crap to get acquainted.

Oblivion, I have it for all three. I got it for PS3 originally, as my brother didn't want me using the xbox for it, then I wanted the DLC, so I got the xbox version, then I wanted to use mods, so then I finally got the PC version. I played that game like hell.
