He did the plot, combat, driving, talking, character creation, inventoy system and gear customisation. If that's not touching the core of the game, I'm not sure what is. Yes, he may not have spend much time on any of it, but there's so much in this game that he couldn't have gone into detail on...

What does that even mean? I don't think he "missed" so much as didn't care to mention that you can change your character's hair style. And just how thorough can a roughly 5 minute review be on a game that can take upwards of 20 hours to complete (if you go all out with the side quests)...
