The North American PC retail version was unplayable out of the box. With users unable to install the game the publisher had to recall and replace all North American DVD's of the game.
When did we become obsessed with multiplayer? I'd say when the shareware version of DOOM was released back in 1993. Previous to that most games were single player or hot seat play only. After that LAN and later internet play became almost mandatory for many game genres.

There is also an old school novelization of XCOM: UFO Defense that was fairly good.
You may want to avoid real time strategy or first person shooter games that require fast reaction times and overload your ability to keep track of things. Those could be too frustrating for an older person.

Fallout 3 seemed to revive market interest in post apocalyptic video games. But some hard core gamers complained it didn't provide the roleplaying experience of the classic Fallout games.
Perhaps it's time for Hasbro to respond by developing a Gamma World roleplaying video game?
