It's not nearly as open as Oblivion, but it is as open as a game with a linear (and pretty impressive) story can be. You have no timeline on completing anything, you can do stuff in pretty much any order, and you can do the sidequests at any time up until you initiate the final battle. But...

By far, Aries in GoW one. Good GOD (pun very intended) I replayed that 65 quadrillion times. Also, possibly the Archdemon in Dragon Age.

I actually had the exact same experience. My advice? Try playing a mage. The combat as a warrior PC is shit and the rogue isn't much better. But as a mage, you get freezy death, thunderstorm death, fiery death, beetle death, stone death, paralyze and pretty much anything else you could hope...

But how many more did it leave out to dry? That's the more important question.
