This is going to be a lot worse for new games than for WoW. At least WoW already has subscribers and there aren't that many people buying new copies of it. On the other hand, new MMOs like Warhammer Online depend on selling copies to grow.

IMO WoW is past it's prime and the expansion will probably harm it rather than help it, also it requires quite a lot of time especially in the higher levels. If you are looking to get an MMO I would say Warhammer Online as it is the same basic concept as WoW although more focused on PvP/RvR...

Age of Pirates was like this as well. At first it sounded really good with free form RPG gameplay but the developers decided to put in a crappy storyline to give the game 'structure'. Kinda wrecked it for me.

I would have to say WoW for all the hours of my life it wasted, but also Myst III:Exile after I got stuck about 20minutes into the game and could make no further progress without internet walkthroughs..

I am interested in knowing why everybody thinks that the game should be set in Elsewyr? What makes it so much better than all the other provinces?

My idea is that it could be set shortly after Oblivion finished, the Empire is disintegrating and the other races are declaring their independence and trying to establish themselves. All the provinces would be present and accessible, Cyrodiil, Hammerfell, High Rock, Skyrim, Morrowind, Black...
