I think having developers recognized for their work at Child's Play could be a good idea even if its not a full award's show. Child's Play is already one of the industry's greatest events of the year.
Are you just thinking of Spike's god-awful VGAs? There are video game awards that probably are televisied, but they don't have the popularity of Spike's VGAs. Some of the awards shows are presented by and voted by the people in the industry. I'm more than sure that they have interest in gaming.
