Question of the Day, August 2, 2010

I love it. In fact almost anything with the 'punk' suffix tends to float my boat, cyberpunk being the favourite. That being said, it can on occasion be a way of shoehorning 'inventiveness' into an otherwise ordinary story or setting. Therefore, I'm very pleased that it's one genre that the...

The World's LEAST hated video game developer

Quite. "Most loved" is not the same as "least hated". For example, I love Square Enix, but I'm fully aware that many people despise them. Personally I dislike Valve for a number of reasons, but primarily because - for no reason I can determine (although the absolute malfunctioning evil that...

    Poll: RPG King?

I think Bioware is head and shoulders over the rest when it comes to the quality and consistency of their body of work. However, I'm voting for Ion Storm, simply because their TWO great RPGs, Deus Ex and the criminally underrated Anachronox are both fantastic and very different from anything...

Poll: What matters most in a video game?

I think the story is most important. A game has to be at least playable of course, but a good story can rescue poor (or at least, unsophisticated) gameplay more easily than good gameplay can save a bad story. Obviously though, it depends on the game in question.

Bioware: FF13 is not an RPG

What a strange thing for him to say. After all, if it has whiskers, four legs and goes 'meow' it's still a cat, not matter what you call it, so I'm not really sure what he's trying to get at here - is he trying to say that (the genre formally known as) JRPGs are inferior? Regardless, most...

    Gamings best character relationships

I loved all the relationships between characters in BG2, but my favourite will always be the romance (if you pursue it) between Aerie and the player character. It has a tenderness that is seldom seen in videogame romances. My all-time favourite though is Cloud and Tifa in FFVII, for many of...

    What's Your Drug of Choice?

Bass you say? Now that's a man's beer, that is. As for myself... hmm, well any uppers are always welcome. However, the only thing I really couldn't do without on a regular basis is tea. Take away my morning cuppa and I'd devolve into some lower form of life.

Question of the Day, May 8, 2010

Apple's marketing is so obnoxious the prospect of a world run by them chills me to the bone.

Calvin and Hobbes: The best comic strip ever created?

Yes it is, it's my favourite comic strip. I love The Far Side and Dilbert very much as well, both are utterly fantastic. However, C&H just edges out Larson and Adams' strips because it has heart. Not every strip is there just to make a joke, and that's what's so wonderful about it.

    Wolverine and the X-men

I've only watched a couple of episodes but I quite liked it. From your descriptions I should go away and watch some more. Of course, the 90s version is pretty unassailable in my eyes, and I too liked Evolution!

Movies you can't make good games out of.

The Remains of The Day springs to mind. The only way I can think of it being made into a game (and not a good one) is sort of like Hitman only with laying tables and polishing cutlery as opposed to killing, occasionally punctuated with some cinematics of awkward pleasantries being exchanged...

    Review: Alan Wake

It sounds top, and more than a little like the 360's timely answer to Heavy Rain. Let's hope it's similarly successful, and leads to the games industry giving a little bit more of a shit about storytelling. I'll be buying it as soon as I have the dough.

    Most Irritating Support Character?

I'm amazed no-one's mentioned him, but Cole from Gears of War 2 (I've not played the first one, but I imagine he was in that too). In a game full of dreadful characters, he's the loudest, most roided-up macho chump of them all. So annoying. Also, I have it on good authority that the...

A quick question about Steam and Source SDK

Thanks for all the help guys. Right, I've got some game buying to do!

A quick question about Steam and Source SDK

Ok cool, so I could buy the Orange Box (in disk form) off Amazon say, or in a store, then Steam would detect that I'd got it, let me download Source SDK, and then I could run the whole lot in offline mode, if I wanted to? If so, that's great! *Gets credit card out in anticipation*
