I think that's why I didn't find it depressing, because I could see it coming and it seemed inevitable. Also, if what happened didn't happen* then it would have ruined the whole premise of the film and would have become a character study more than a film.
In a way, I'm glad they included it*...
See now I watched this and within the first 20 minutes I figured out what was going to happen at the end. I just thought it was a bit too slow. It's a sad ending but I wouldn't say it's the most depressing film ever. Or maybe I'm just heartless.

I was in a similar situation a couple of weeks ago. Cut my right palm open quite deep and had to have stitches.
