A Stranger In A Strange Land by Robert Heinlein is an excellent book as is the Hyperion/Endymion quadriology By Dan Simmons. Anything by Phillip K Dick. also for quick hits Edmund Cooper books are cool and Mr Clarke is awesome as always.
