Never. It's disgusting, animalistic and anyone who has to resort to such a cheap tactic is a bad parent (I say this after being on the recieving end of physical punishment as a kid not from my mum, not from my dad, but from my STEP-DAD, ugh).

After every major plot development there is usually a good hour or so of gameplay time for you to do whatever you like before the next part of the forced event.
Of course even if you miss a major story event, you can continue playing to save survivors, kill zombies and level-up...
I'd actually argue that Left 4 Dead 2 has the higher replay value. Dead Rising 2 has a lot of replay, but the events that unfold are the same every time - everything is in the same place - and once you've done everything (which there is a lot of) there is nothing more to do.
