As I understand it, most of the heavy armour was worn by guys on horseback. Horses, particularly the larger Western breeds, could handle the load (they were often bred for this specific purpose). The actual foot soldiers wore mostly chain and scale mail, which is quite a bit lighter than solid...

I've always been partial to the Black Templars colour scheme. The contrast of the Black and White, combined with Red and/or Gold trim looks fantastic, IMO. Edit: OT: Tactical Dreadnought ("Terminator") Armour; because to use Dreadnought Armour, you have to be at least 3/4 dead.
