One of the motion capture guys for MGS4 displayed that he could do a good impression of a monkey, so they just decided to throw it in. Sure, it ruins the dramatic tension of every scene it's in, but come on: it's a monkey!
Well, to be fair, Event Horizon ripped off of Warhammer 40k. And I can't imagine the "tear-a-hole-in-space-and-have-demon-space-ooglies-crawl-out" was a novel concept when WH40k did it, either.
