    The Downfall of Japanese Games?

Damn, I was hoping to be inb4 the obligatory "FFVII was the last great offering" praise, but alas, I had stuff to do today. Yes, Squeenix has been on the downhill trot, but so has every thing in video games. It's all about the glitzy glam of the visuals than about the story. My point though, is...

Old PC games you still play.

Geez, you guys consider "old" to be something that's 3 years old? Come on, nobody here played Duke Nukem 3D? Dune (omg talking in a video game!), Alice? Wolfenstein/DOOM, Heretic? I'll toss in my 2 cents about one vastly overlooked MMO: Final Fantasy XI I played it on release, then quit for WoW, then quit WoW to rejoin FFXI. Also, I play WAR but honestly, I don't think it has any staying power because of the aforementioned "small" world, and also very boring and...

I don't pay "achievements" any mind. I know some people who make it a mission to unlock all they can in a game, but honestly, it doesn't really have an effect on anything you play, other than giving my completeist friends something to do :)

    Quality in EA games.

IMO, in recent years they've crawled out of their sports-only niche and have had some good results. Now they've got Warhammer Online which isn't going to be a WoW killer by any means, but has a decent playerbase.

    Are games getting dumber?

I agree with the OP: It seemed to me the longer I have been playing games, the less lasting fun and charm they possess. But I don't think we're just out of ideas, I just think things have gotten so immensely complicated on a technological basis, that we've lost the things that really matter...
