I personally just hate when my girlfriend tries to do it to me. I don't bruise easily so when she refuses to stop it usually gets quite painful. Also the fact that she occasionally draws blood isn't too fun.

Weis and Hickman are great reads, I've always been a fan. The Dresden Files is a great series by Jim Butcher. 11 books so far I think... mixture of fantasy and modern day detective work.
