I usually keep my starters. The only games I didn't were Gold/Heartgold. For some reason I could never get into those starting pokemon... Always ending up packing them in for something better (Typhlosion for Arcanine, Feraligator for Gyrados, etc.). Other than those versions, I usually pick up...

Dark Elf Battlemage, as per my usual. Sword/Lightning combo in heavy armor. Might switch to light armor for when I'm just faffing about.
