Comix Zone is great. Nobody has mentioned Mutant Chronicles Doom Troopers, a rare Contra-esque experience. Also try Dune 2 for brain strain and Zombies Ate My Neighbours for goofiness and frustration.

Just what springs to mind first: Warcraft 2 - Destroying two fully functional Orc bases with a mage, a paladin and two rangers. Resident Evil 4 - Killing Krauser with a knife. Need for Speed: Carbon - Figuring out how to drift a million. (derp)

Mostly NES and Genesis games, such as Ninja Gaiden, Final Mission aka S.C.A.T. (but a bit more hardcore), Streets of Rage (the Spanish stew of a remake for PC is pretty awesome), Mutant Chronicles Doom Troopers (YAY!), Strike series etc. As for DOSBox-legged old farts, can't get Blood running...
