How is it that he can't scrounge up $100k of his own money after all of his super amazing successful movies that he's always pulling out of his ass? (read: gets massive tax incentives by filming in places where that stuff goes down so the movies are always profitable)

Tex Murphy: Martian Memorandum sure tried its damndest to bridge that gap by being sold on something like 16 floppy disks and featured little video clips of characters as you talked to them. A foreshadowing nod to the FMV insanity that was to come, if you will.

A combination of bringing difficulty back into gaming, and actual consequences for failure, whether that's through limited lives or checkpoints and saves spaced further apart. And none of this "reset to your last checkpoint but keep all of your experience/gold/gear/what have you because...
