This isn't about me saying that video games present a stereotype that I feel is unattainable for me personally, it's not an ideal I care for - I'm 6' tall, average build with long hair, a beard and piercings. It's not about me whining about feeling inadequate, it's about the shallow...
I don't understand what you mean. If you're asking whether I think this post will achieve anything, then no, it won't. It's a public forum and whatever gets said here is just a drop in the ocean. The point of a forum is discussion.
You're obviously giving extreme examples (I love the mental image of the Duke Nukem one, he was trying to save the 'babes' afterall, maybe a secret feminist? Ok maybe not), and yes, it has a context. I'm happy to admit I love over-the-top guns and explosions in games! It's both funny and...
It's stated as an opinion, hence "I think it is fair to say..." but regardless...I agree that it would be silly for games to deliberately 'cast against type' for the sake of it and of course I know games are not real life and are a 'hyper-reality' like film.
Games have become more 'realistic'...
The power armour deals with the latter problem, I reckon. It's the future!
It's weird, but I never even mentioned Gears of War when I started the post and pretty much everyone else has.
But I don't need your 'validation' and I'm not going to butt heads with you. I didn't start this thread to 'be right' or show dominance, just to raise an issue. The way you'll probably see this is "I called him out, he backed down, so I win." but the thread goes on.
I agree, but I think as games get more complex and involving it is going to be harder to justify these character choices - maybe the idea of a preset player character will be done away with so that the games character is only you as a player and your choices in the game?
You're correct about context and physical form, (although fighting games tend towards the ridiculous end of the scale). I also agree that GTA has always been about that 'struggle to the top' structure. However, those games are based on a well-worn 'mob-movie' genre stereotype which has been...
I am very much my own person, it's not about me comparing myself to these characters (as you rightly state, they don't exist!) it's my annoyance with the characters themselves and how poorly they tend to represent men (in this instance) and women.
The good thing is that many games are...
You're not really paying attention, are you? I'm unhappy with the macho stereotypes presented by a lot of video games.
(or if you prefer) YOU WIN! YOU'RE SO RIGHT! GO YOU!
