I usually agree, because a preset cinematic storyline probably means more focus upon said storyline, and cinematic events within. More story possibilities presumably means less development upon each of those expositional "paths," for the programming required would simply be too massive.
Ideally, the death penalty is a deterrent. Fatal punishments were instituted in order to frighten any future opposition through verbal - sometimes visual - demonstrations of the consequences. If viewed as an objective and isolated case, the death penalty might not be the most effective...
