I think that certain games (God of War, Zelda, and ect) need a life bar while other games play much better without one. I think the need of a life bar should depend on weather or not the game is more, lets say, fluid with one or not.

Final Fantasy IV and BioShock, transversely... Assassin's Creed took me forever to play, I'd pick it up and play it for an hour or so and then not touch it for like a month. It really took me almost a year to beat that game.
