Missing: Since January [http://www.adventurecompanygames.com/tac/missing/] should probably be mentioned here, seeing as how it's a proper adventure game that consists mainly of navigating the internet.
I think the timeline here is a bit specious because it neglects important developments...
It's sort of interesting that the "universal ratings system" wouldn't include music, given all the fuss raised about explicit lyrics and such in the late eighties/early nineties.
An RPG without stats and skill points and visible numbers and so forth will inevitably be considered part of another genre, because genre in games is a very strange thing. What genre a game belongs in is determined by how the player interacts with the game world, and "RPG" has become a catch-all...
