Good review, it's on my to-play list after Kikokugai and Persona3.
I'm kind of regretting watching the anime first, but I just got sick of waiting (I saw a PV for the VN back in '09 and was amazed) - even though the anime was very well done, the artstyle was what really caught my attention...
I watched the anime alongside/right after reading the VN, and I would say that while you miss most of the good stuff in the first half (i.e Kyou and Tomoyo) the execution of the second season anime surpasses that of the VN After Story, without leaving out major characterisation in the shortening...
