There is a game known as Savage2 that combines pvp with simcity you might be interested. its quite esoteric with only about hundred people playing it but its a good game.

When your playing a DOTA clone, the best way to become good is through experience. You have to be familiar with all the Champions and what they are capable of. you can also watch pro players stream and watch tournaments to see various strategies and what Champions you might want to purchase...

That honor goes to Heroes of Newerth. I am really bad at dota clones but i still play them. the Community has a low tolerance for failure so my lack of skill is compounded with insults to my race and/or mother.
