I believe that being a man(or woman) means that you can form your own opinions and not be limited by a gender role or stereotype, and that if you don't agree with an idea or gender role you are not afraid to challenge it and mold it into what you think it should be.
I agree it depends on the circumstances and also phobias (I wouldn't let a child with a fear of drowning/water play Bioshock).
