It's so weird that after talking about all this, I'm taking part in 'Global Games Jam' this weekend and am totally making a water themed part. I'm such a hypocrite. Haha
Not an original answer by any means but I can explain it. Super Metroid
To give a little context. I used to play every game I had through all the console eras with my brothers. We used to play games like Alex Kidd, SMB3 and Sonic on rotation. If you die, pass the controller to the left. I...
Was it New Super Mario Bros Wii that has the floating blocks of water suspended in mid air that you could swim through? I really liked that idea.
I guess with the definition of a water level being in question here, you have to look what it's there for.
If maneuverability is a real pain and...
Little big adventure 1 and 2 will always hold a special place for me as I grew up with them and they made a big impression on me.
Does anyone remember urban chaos?
Hmm interesting...
I can't help but picture a design meeting at a game studio where the project leader storms in and says:
"No one likes water levels!"
"But we spent ages making it look pretty and the soundtrack kicks ass!"
"Well we just got back a ton of data from players of the last...
I was going to ask what games people remember for having the most contemptible water levels but I did a forum search and found some pretty good fodder. My next thought was as follows:

What I love...
THAAAAANK YOU! I'm glad that not every single person in the universe is spellbound by the Harry Potter franchise (see what I did there). It really is a total waste of time for me. Although I do not pretend to like it, it still remains as one of those things I just can not get my head around. My...
The Uncharted series.
Tried them all and they just feel like massive effort to play. I can see it's well made but I just can't seem to care about it. I usually get about halfway through on my first play of the game and then never load it up again.
My old drum teacher used to say to me:
"A drummer with only a kick, snare and hats will reach the core of what it is to be a drummer in half the time of the rich kid with the worlds largest drum kit."
I apply this lesson to almost anything creative that I do. Obviously, the more tools you...
Very good points. I think what I was trying to get across was the way that sometimes it can take a slightly more familiar version of something to ease you into the deep end. I understand that when a game is made with a democratic decision making process that builds on safe bets and base rates...
