Has nobody recommended the His Dark Materials series? Altogether, it's more than 300 pages, and the movie was pretty bad. Or at least, my memories of it was, I'm pretty sure they left out a lot of important parts. Also, I'm gonna add to the Song of Ice and Fire and the Abhorsen crowd.
