My parents are Dutch, though both of them have traces of German and French in them.
Funny thing is that French people speak French to me, German people German, and Dutch people English..:-S
In my opinion these borders barely exist anymore. My country is considered multi-cultural, yet there is tension and sometimes even hate wherever you go. It's hard to draw lines between these cultures, considering that they sometimes occupy the same apartment-block.
I would give my firstborn the ability to age a bit slower, yet retains his ability to learn and process information as any other Human being of his age. My reason; he can enjoy his innocence for a longer period then his parents did :-P.
You're free to choose with whoever you want to be friends with. If that said-friend weasels his way back into your circle, you might also question the integrity of your other friends, relative to your own morals.
It isn't much of philosophy to adhere to, just a little figment of thought somewhere at the back of my brain. I love to share these little tidbits of thoughts, though this doesn't mean I have a big Mayan Calendar somewhere stuck on my wall.

I've put my money on 'it can't be saved'.
But actually, that's something that evolved from the 'Great Green Gore'-hype. I've lost our faith and capacity in actually trying to keep this planet habitable for our next 20-or something generations.
Then again, that's just my humble opinion.
It's nice to see something different compared to our traditional, Western views.
They should turn that country into a live-action theme-park (don't feed natives though :-P).
