Halo started out with health packs and dodgy vehicle sections (In the sense they were more for getting around then actual combat enhancement, warthogs... EGH!) mind you. So I count Halo as a step on the ladder towards the modern FPS not the root.

Bossfight in Mass Effect because you then realise it's over and you start to cry.
The boss fight in Guitar Hero 3. Because "the devil went to georgia" can't be won in expert unless you have a third robotic arm with 8 fingers.
The original Fable, if you look at it the game was vile. But it still amused me, and I was hooked to it for quite alot.
Also I think Halo: Combat Evolved deserved it's praises and was neither overrated nor bad. It should not be mentioned in this thread ;)
