Horrendously long "tutorial" stages before you actually get into the game. (Taris in KOTOR, and Peragus in KOTOR II, for example)
Forced tutorial stages, where you need to have everything explained to you, no matter how simple it is.
Left 4 Dead 2 has everything the first game has, with more enemies and weapons. But, the levels are much brighter in the second game, I like the scenery in the first Left 4 Dead much better.
Dark Messiah: Might and Magic Elements.
That's probably my favorite "non-mainstream" RPG game. It has some really cool features, including having to craft your weapons via-forge by yourself as opposed to the game automatically doing it for you.
