Mount & Blade Warband is amazingly fun and addictive, also a fairly active mod community. Not a lot of story though if that's what you're looking for... Mass Effect, Dragon Age etc. if you want a RPG with story. Fallout 3, Obvlion etc are also good open ended RPGs
