The only thing I'll go out of my way to block on sites like the escapist are those infuriating ads that border the video and grey everything else out, effectively removing ALL other functionality from the site. The other stuff is annoying but that I can deal with.

The only gripe I have with valve is that they haven't said ANYTHING about the half-life series at all. zero communication is hardly the best policy in any matter and this is no exception. I would even be happy to hear "there will be no more half-life games, ever." Just so long as it's SOMETHING.

I have no idea if this would work or not, but maybe you could try uninstalling steam before installing the game? there's gotta be some kind of backup plan for anyone without the service right? probably a dumb idea but its what i would do.
