a shotgun is always a nice place to start. something like the Mossberg 590 in 12ga. wouldn't be a terrible idea, plus there's all kinds of accessories you can slap on it, like flashlights and different stocks, etc. Also shotguns like that are usually reasonably priced, generally $300+ or so...
