I will argue for the RPG element as defined by Yahtzee. You are right that there is too much of it. When the RPG is integral to the game, not just slapped on as an item on a checklist. It can be great. My personal favorite examples of good RPG in a non RPG game are Batman: Rise of Sin Tzu (Xbox)...
