The Mortal Engines quartet by Philip Reeve is a good series of steampunk books. It's a post- apocalypse series, and revolves around moving cities (London being the main one) that eat each other. I'd definately recommend them.

"Flying is learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss"- Douglas Adams. Maybe not as deeply meaningful and thoughtful as some quotes but it's still my favourite. Possibly rivaled by Stephen Wright's "Eagles may soar, but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines".

After you've got a firearm out, it's possible to be forced to shoot. Often there's no choice whether to draw a gun, but in this there was. They should have used non-lethal weapons, but sometimes the wrong choice is made. Those policemen made the wrong choice.
